Insurance Sales Script for Quote Calls: Every Line From the Opener to the Objections and the Close

Published October 25, 2026 · Updated October 26, 2026 · 9 minute read

The customer wants a price, and you need to know what you are pricing. Below is one quote-call script, start to finish: the opener, the questions, the recommendation, the objections and the close, with the line to say at each moment.

Quick answer

An insurance sales script for a quote call gets three things before the price: confirmed facts or the declarations page, a summary the customer agrees with, and one recommendation tied to what they said. Then give the premium. Answer each objection with one sorting question, and ask to bind, take the application, or set a dated next step.

What should an insurance sales script do on a quote call?

It should get you through three checkpoints before you say a price, then carry the call to a decision. Our method names them Paper, Picture and Pick.

  1. Paper. You quote from the declarations page or facts the customer has confirmed, not from memory. Expect some callers not to have it to hand; take what they know and mark the rest to confirm.
  2. Picture. The customer says “yes, that’s it” to your two-sentence summary of their situation. Expect a correction. It keeps a wrong fact out of the quote.
  3. Pick. You recommend one option, tied to what they told you, before the premium. Expect “so what’s the price?” before you finish. Say you will give it in a minute.

After the checkpoints come the premium, the objections and the close. Each has its lines below.

Why the price waits

In our view, a premium said first becomes the only thing the customer compares. They hold it against a policy you haven’t seen, and you lose the chance to show what the difference buys.

How do you open an insurance quote call?

Say who you are and why you are calling, then ask for the few minutes the questions need. Never suggest someone asked for a quote when they did not.

Agency MVP’s opening script for property-and-casualty leads leaves the word quote out of the opener. That suits a web lead. When the customer called you for a price, say it.

The moment: an inbound price call.

Happy to get you a price on this call. To make it a real number, I need a few minutes of questions about what you have now. Is now a good time?

The moment: calling back a quote request.

Hi [Name], it’s [your name] at [agency]. You asked us to look at insurance for [the car, the home, the business]. I have a few questions so I quote the right thing. Do you have [ten minutes] now?

The moment: a booked needs review.

Hi [Name], it’s [your name] at [agency], calling for the review we set up. I’d like to hear what has changed since we wrote your policies. Is this still a good time?

What do you ask before you quote?

Ask for the declarations page, then five questions in order, then the questions for the line you are quoting.

A declarations page is the policy’s summary sheet: who and what is insured, the limits, the deductibles and the premium.

Do you have your current declarations page handy? It shows your limits and deductibles, so we compare like with like instead of guessing.

If they can’t find it, take what they remember and mark it as estimates to check before anything is final. Before you quote a line, check you are licensed and appointed for it.

  1. What is involved. What should we include today: the vehicles, the home, the business, or people who depend on you?
  2. What covers it now. Who insures it today, and what made you start looking?
  3. What worries them. If something went wrong this year, what would hurt most?
  4. What changed. Since you last bought this, has anything changed, like a new driver, a renovation, working from home, or new staff?
  5. Timing. When does your current policy renew, and when do you want this decided?

When do you say the premium, and how do you recommend?

Say the premium after the customer confirms your summary and hears your recommendation in plain words.

Let me check I have this right. You want [what they named] covered, you have [what they have now], and what worries you most is [their concern]. You want it in place by [date]. Did I miss anything?
Because [their concern] worries you most, I recommend [the coverage you chose], which pays for [what it pays for, in their words]. The premium is [premium] for [term]. What questions do you have?

Explain a term only when it matters to the decision, in one sentence.

Name only the limits you have recommended, and never promise how a future claim will be paid. If they choose less than you recommended, record it as their informed choice. Ask the carrier whether it needs a signed form; an uninsured motorist rejection is one to check.

How do you answer objections on a quote call?

Sort the objection before you answer it. The same words can mean a budget limit, a coverage doubt, another quote, another person or a polite no.

An objection is the customer’s stated reason not to go ahead yet, and it may be only part of the reason. Ask one sorting question, answer only what it shows, then ask for a decision.

When they sayAsk this first
That’s more than I expected. What were you expecting, and what was it based on?
I got a cheaper quote.Good, let’s use it. Can you read me its limits and deductibles?
I have coverage through work.Do you know what it pays, and whether it continues if you change jobs?
I need to think about it.Of course. Which part: the price, the coverage, or someone else’s view?
I don’t need that much coverage.Which part feels like more than you need?
Just email it to me.I will, today. What do you want to see in it, and who else will read it?

Why one question first: it stops you answering an objection the customer doesn’t have. Two answers need a longer reply.

When the sorting question shows it is the budget:

What monthly figure would work for you? I’ll check the discounts you qualify for first. Then I’ll show you what a higher deductible would change at claim time, and you decide.

When the coverage through work is life insurance:

Let’s read your benefits summary together. It should say what the coverage pays and what happens if you leave. Then you’ll know whether it covers what you told me matters.

Why it works: Ethos’s agent guide asks how the client came to their current amount and whether that coverage is tied to their employer. Reading the summary together answers both.

For pushback on a policy the client already holds, use the renewal objection-handling scripts.

How do you ask to bind or take the application?

Ask plainly whether they want to go ahead. If they are not ready, leave with an action, an owner and a date. To bind is to put property-and-casualty coverage in force on an agreed effective date, within the binding authority your carrier gives you.

  1. Check understanding. Is there anything in the recommendation you’d like me to go over again?
  2. Ask without assuming. Would you like to start this policy on [effective date], or do you want more time?
  3. If yes, name what binding takes. To put this in force I need [signature, payment, documents]. Can we do that now?
  4. Don’t say “you’re covered” early. I’ll confirm as soon as it’s in force, and the policy documents will follow.
  5. If not yet, date it. You want to check [the open question] first. I’ll [your action], and we’ll talk on [day] at [time]. Does that work?

On a life call you don’t bind; you take the application. When coverage starts depends on the carrier’s terms. Some carriers give conditional or temporary coverage under a receipt taken with the first premium, limited by that receipt’s own conditions. Read those terms before you describe them, and say “you’re covered” only when the carrier confirms it.

If the new policy would replace one the client owns, your state’s replacement rules apply, and your script must ask. Where one applies, present the replacement notice for the client to sign, listing each policy to be replaced, at the point your state’s rules require.

Before we go further, would this policy replace or change any life insurance or annuity you have now?

What does the whole script sound like on one call?

Here is one inbound call, line by line, from the opener to the decision.

For example: [Jordan] calls for a price on his car and a renters policy. His auto policy with [current carrier] renews in [month].

  1. Open. You say: “Happy to get you a price on this call. I need a few minutes of questions first. Is now good?” He says yes.
  2. Paper. You ask: “Do you have your declarations page handy?” He finds the auto page in his email. He has no renters policy yet.
  3. Questions. One car, parked on the street, used for [weekend deliveries]. Delivery use is a question to settle with the carrier before you quote.
  4. Picture. You read back your summary and ask: “Did I miss anything?” He says his sister drives it sometimes too. She goes on the quote.
  5. Pick, then price. You recommend [the liability limits you recommended] and renters coverage at [the contents limit you recommended], then give [premium].
  6. Objection. He says: “That’s more than I pay now.” You ask: “What were you expecting, and what was it based on?” His page shows lower liability limits than you recommended.
  7. Decision. He wants the auto from [renewal date], so you bind it once he signs and pays. He wants a day on the renters. You tell him to keep his current policy until you confirm the new one is in force. You book [day] at [time].

What goes wrong on an insurance quote call?

A caller says she just needs a price on her car. You read one out early, and she says she’ll compare and hangs up.

Frequently asked questions

What are some effective scripts for life insurance sales?

Use the same checkpoints. Ask who would need to keep paying the bills if the customer died, and for how long, then recommend from those answers. The close is an application, not a bind: “Would you like to start the application today?”

What should an insurance sales script include?

An opener that says why you are calling, the questions that find what to insure, a read-back the customer confirms, one recommendation, the sorting question for each objection, and a close that ends in a bind, an application or a dated next step.

Are insurance sales scripts compliant to use?

Not automatically. Consent to call, recording, required disclosures and what you may say about coverage depend on the line, the carrier and the state. Have your carrier or compliance contact review the script before you use it.

How do you not sound scripted on a sales call?

Fix the checkpoints and the required disclosures, and let everything else bend. Reword the opener in your own voice, but keep any disclosure your carrier requires word for word. Then pick each next question from the customer’s last answer.

How to sell insurance to a customer?

Find what they want protected before you price anything, recommend one option tied to that, and let them choose with the trade-offs in front of them. A customer who confirmed your summary is comparing coverage, not only a premium.
